Bar None Hat Company is owned and operated by Kaycee Orr Hoffmann who is originally from Greeley, Colorado but now bases her operation in Thedford. She started her hat business in 2003. She learned the hat trade and was mentored by her aunt Susie, former owner of Greeley Hat Works and Coleen Orr who owns Cowboy Up Hatters. The hatting process uses tools and equipment that is no longer manufactured, making the availability of custom hats a rare trade.

GRAIN GOAT

The Grain Goat was invented by Patti and Martin Bremmer of Venango. The Grain Goat is the first U.S. patented, hand-held combine for small grain. It collects, cleans, and calculates moisture in minutes. This new company received their first grant to begin work in 2013 and the first prototype versions started being sold in 2016. The Grain Goat 2.0 which you can purchase today became available in November of 2020.

The Nollette family’s roots run deep in the Sandhills. In the late 1800’s Joseph Nenzel founded the town of Nenzel in the sandhills of Nebraska. The Nenzel-Nollette family has lived in the area for five generations. Among the rolling sand dunes and wide-open spaces, you will find the Niobrara Valley Vineyard in Nenzel, Nebraska owned by Greg and Cynthia Nollette. The Nollette’s have owned and operated the Vineyard since 2002.

VILLAGE BARN SADDLERY

Recently opened in the spring of 2021 by Jerry Foerderer and his wife Laurie, the Village Barn Saddlery is rapidly becoming an icon of the Sandhills. Jerry’s father helped him rebuild used machines to help launch his business. When he was just 18, he traveled east to Amish leather shops to learn the leather trade. The once Village Barn restaurant is now filled to the brim with all things leather: tack, boots, and antiques. If you want a custom pair of chaps from Jerry, you will need to order about 7 months in advance because of his sought-after leatherwork.

They also offer vehicle alignment, oil changes and brake repair. “R” Tire offers 24-hour service, farm, in the field, and roadside service and are the official Firestone Ag dealership for the area.

In 2008 In Burton Nebraska, Tall Tails Taxidermy was founded by Ann Neiffer along with the help of her daughter Aimee and son Thad. The Tall Tails Taxidermy’s tag line perfectly describes their business moto “Furry, Feathery, or Scaly, we can do it all!” Ann moved her business to the Cherry Street Plaza in Valentine in August of 2020. Deer are the bread and butter, but birds, coyotes, bobcats, elk, fish, and various other animals are completed as well. Ann’s two bears playing poker is a must see.

Joe and the Whiteaker Western Store just recently celebrated 90 years of business. Today you will find still find fresh-pressed jeans, hats, boots, horse tack, and so much more.

The Peppermill & E.K. Valentine Lounge is a 3rd-generation family restaurant that specializes in Nebraska & South Dakota beef. The Peppermill is owned and operated by Robert and Lacey Joseph. The Joseph family for the past 6 generations have called the Sandhills their home. The Peppermill has changed a bit since the original opening in 1986 but their commitment to Nebraska Beef, Valentine, and the Sandhills has not changed.

Crawford Livestock Market is owned and operated by Alicia Robertson and her husband Rich, second generation owners. They purchased Crawford Livestock Market in 2019 from Alicia’s parents. Crawford Livestock sells about 85,000 head through the ring and another 20,000 through Western Video Market. Located in Crawford, the Markets have been serving the Tri State Area since 1930.
